Product Manager’s Goal


To build an assortment that delivers the right bike to every customer that comes to Performance Bicycle. 




Job Overview


Traditionally known as a merchant, the product manager for bikes, is responsible for the successful implementation of all bicycles throughout the chain. The PM-Bikes sources, evaluates, negotiates, and prices product for the Bikes category.  He/she manages sales and margins on a daily basis; interacts regularly with all areas of the company including merchandising, creative, marketing, e-commerce, distribution, customer service, etc. Helps to train and develop Merchandise Assistant and other members of the Bikes team.  




Job Responsibilities


  • Develops and is responsible for the annual plan for bike sales, assortment, margin, inventory and promotional activities


  • Works closely with marketing to develop and implement an overall strategy for retail, web and catalog presentation and promotion to achieve business objectives
  • Leads change and brings new ideas/strategies to develop and grow the business
  • Fosters growth and ownership among members of the Bikes team.
  • Selects and negotiates with vendors; develops and implements strategic plans with key vendors
  • Works closely with inventory planning team to align inventory with promotional efforts as well as partner in life cycle management
  • Assess need and position private label product to compliment the overall assortment
  • Work with Bikes and Proprietary teams to develop design guidelines for all proprietary goods
  • Builds on synergies with Bike Nashbar to manage product lifecycles with key vendors
  • Stay involved and up-to-date on the bike business as it relates to the Performance business including position in the marketplace, customer base and consumer expectations


  • Work with retail partners to maximize the sales and develop regional assortments




  • In-depth knowledge of bicycle industry and bicycle products including market trends, vendors/suppliers
  • Thorough understanding of bicycle manufacturing and product life-cycles
  • Strong analytical and negotiating skills
  • Strategic thinker and consensus builder who works well on a team as well as independently


  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must have 5-7 years hardgoods buying experience for a retail chain
  • Sporting Goods experience a plus
  • Excellent computer skills, especially with Microsoft Excel
