Job Purpose:

The Product Category Director – Active Essentials plays a key leadership role developing growth strategies and managing the profitability of the Nathan product line within United Sports Brands’ portfolio of brands.  This position is responsible for strategic growth, extensive business and competitive analysis, business case development, product category planning, and financial forecasting input. 


Business Growth Planning & Analysis:

  • Deliver short and long-range business and financial (revenue and profit) goals for Active Essentials (Hydration, Bottles, Visibility and Gear).

  • Develop and execute growth initiatives that deliver long-term objectives.  Establish and track key metrics.

  • Lead 3-year category growth strategies and annual operating plan development including participation in volume, tactical, and financial planning. 

  • Develop business cases for new product, category or channel concepts.  Business analysis necessary to make fact-based go/no-go decisions.  

  • Recommend and evaluate product pricing and quantify expected impact on volume and margins.

  • Provide meaningful analysis, forecast and consumption data as part of the inventory and new product forecasting processes.  

  • Utilize data analysis and data sources to anticipate business trends, competitive activity, understand implications, and make sound conclusions and recommendations.  

  • Assist with department budget development and management as needed.  

Team Leadership:

  • Key member of the New Product/Innovation team including CEO, CFO, SVP Sales, SVP/VPs Marketing & SVP/VP Product Development.   This team is responsible for the new product/channel strategy, product pipeline, and regular product line / SKU review and decisions. 

  • Lead cross-functional business team to achieve annual plan financial objectives, and develop contingency plans and responses to changing marketplace conditions. 

  • Lead new product launch/commercialization teams in the development and execution of detailed commercialization product plans.

  • Member of the international channel team representing both marketing and product development.

  • Continuously improve cross-functional planning, alignment, business process, and decision-making processes.  

Marketing Responsibilities:

  • Provide category direction to Marketing team and collaborate on development of category marketing plans

  • Support product research strategy, planning, resourcing, execution and analysis through use of external resources.   Synthesize information from market and product research findings to develop insights that guide strategic and tactical plans and consumer communication.

  • Provide input on packaging structure and design strategy, branding, packaging change process and planning, claims and product descriptions in collaboration with Product and Marketing  

Product Planning:

  • Partner with leadership to capture the new product strategy, define the product pipeline planning processes, and ensure marketing and product strategy alignment. 

  • Collaborate with Product Development on Product planning and product line review process.   Provide key insight on Specialty Run, Cycle and Outdoor consumer and market.

  • Work collaboratively with Product and Innovation Team to identify and evaluate new products, line extensions, and SKU rationalization opportunities.

  • Regularly communicates status of new product initiatives across entire organization.

  • Participate in the annual catalog planning process including decisions related to product offering, pricing, and product descriptions/content.


  • 10+ years of consumer product marketing, brand or product management experience for branded products including cross-functional brand or product team leadership and business management.

  • Proven track record of leading strategic growth for Consumer Brands, Products or Categories.  Experience with Run, Cycle, Outdoor or Active Lifestyle brands/categories a plus

  • Depth and breadth of experience in the Specialty Run market, CPG categories (related category/products preferred), company sizes (large CPG and smaller company or division), low penetration brand/products.

  • Demonstrates high business acumen and has substantive experience with, and, understanding of P&L management including management of a significant consumer brand with P&L responsibility

  • Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically with a general management orientation.  

  • Cross-functional understanding and ability to achieve business results through strategic involvement of finance, operations, product development, marketing communications, and vendor partners. 

  • Well developed leadership skills including the ability to inspire others, set direction/vision, drive innovation, get results through others, manage change, develop organization/team, coach and develop others.   

  • Business analysis and planning experience including sound judgment and decision-making.  Exceptional analytical thinking skills including the ability to see trends, identify implications and use depth and breadth of experience to focus on what’s important.

  • Effective written communication, presentation skills, and influencing skills both internally and externally.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead and develop a collaborative results-oriented team environment.

  • Adaptable, resilient, flexible, fast-paced/sense of urgency, and a high level of multitasking ability.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or marketing.  MBA strongly preferred.
